TfL Pilots Mobile Coverage Mapping in Underground Tunnels
Transport for London has piloted Streetwave's portable mapping units in high-traffic underground tunnels to assess mobile connectivity for passengers and staff.
Transport for London has carried out a pilot programme with Streetwave to map mobile coverage within underground tunnel sections of the London transport network.
The pilot used Streetwave’s portable mapping units, compact battery-powered sensors that can operate in environments where traditional drive-testing equipment cannot, to collect signal data from all four major UK mobile operators within tunnel sections.
The data provides TfL with a detailed picture of connectivity for passengers using mobile devices underground, and supports planning for future connectivity improvements including 4G and 5G in-tunnel rollout.
The project represents a significant step in understanding the real connectivity experience of London commuters in underground environments.
